This week's Good Facility is a combination of a large junction in the town of Maassluis (with updated cycling infrastructure to allow bi-directional cycling) and a service road. The intention is to show how different types of provision for cycling connect seamlessly with each other, and maintain high levels of comfort and safety for cycling in different contexts.
Cycling is temporally separated from motor traffic at this junction, meaning no conflict whatsoever on this busy road.
Meanwhile the entry to the junction is from a service road, visible in the background. This is a low traffic street, only used for accessing a small number of properties. A bollard prevents drivers from using this street as a through route, while allowing people cycling to travel in two directions along this side of the road.
The final detail is the induction loops in the asphalt here, detecting the presence of anyone waiting on a bicycle. The lights will change automatically in their favour.
