Another example this week of a simple, cheap and effective way of converting streets into proper 'access streets', by closing them as through routes to motor traffic, while leaving them open to walking and cycling.
This is Back Hill in Clerkenwell, London, which allows motor vehicle access, but doesn't allow driving through it, thanks to this simple bollard arrangement. The street itself is quiet and calm as a result, and safe to cycle on.
These arrangements also make it substantially easier to cross the road on foot - not only is the gap between footways much narrower (only cycle traffic has to be accommodated) but also there is no motor traffic to deal with at the crossing.
