Bollard

An upright pole used principally to prevent motor vehicle access. 

Gaps between bollards should be 1.5m, to allow access by the cycle design vehicle, while preventing access by (four-wheeled) motor traffic.

Bollards can present a crash and injury risk, so careful consideration should be given to whether other measures could be used to prevent motor vehicle access - for instance, signs and enforcement.

Where bollards are used, they should be reflective and brightly coloured, and (if possible) be reasonably flexbile to minimise injury risk. A good example - high-visiblity, flexible, and appropriately spaced - is shown below.
