I think poynton cuts to the crux of the question: what comes first traffic reduction or walking / cycling infrastructure? The text book says the former, experience says the latter. Design wise Poynton looks really nice. You could argue that it's at least managed to make some changes without space being lost to on street car parking.
It is pretty useful in challenging uk assumptions on what is and is not safe, 27000 vehicles a day with no signals and no guardrail.
Or should local cycle campaigners have tried to block the scheme and pushed for a bypass?
