The Transport Research Laboratory, at Crowthorne in Berkshire.
The Laboratory was formerly part of the Department for Transport, but is now an independent company following privatisation in 1996. In its own words, the TRL is
an internationally recognised centre of excellence providing world-class research, consultancy, product testing covering all aspects of transport.
In 2013 various elements of continental infrastructure design - including cycle tracks behind bus stops, and around roundabouts - began being tested at the site, on behalf of Transport for London.
