A type of pedestrian crossing, the name “puffin” deriving from “Pedestrian User-Friendly INtelligent crossing”.
Unlike pelican crossings, which have far side signals, the lights displaying whether it is safe or not to cross are located on a box mounted on the same pole as the push button (as below), instead of on the far side of the road.
Also unlike pelican crossings, there is no flashing green for pedestrians, and no flashing amber for vehicular traffic.
Puffin crossings can also extend the crossing duration by keeping the road-facing lights red if they detect that the person crossing is taking longer than normal.
