A term used to describe the obstacles to the uptake of cycling as a mode of transport. Essentially, the reason why people choose not to cycle for trips that could easily be cycled.
Research consistently shows that one of the biggest and most pervasive barriers to cycling in Britain is safety, and the perception of danger. In addition cycling is often (unnecessarily) inconvenient, and seen as abnormal. These barriers are principally addressed by designing cycling environments that are safe, attractive and inviting.
