This week's Good Cycling Facility is an underpass running the ring road skirting the Dutch city of Assen.
Like all good underpasses, this is effectively an 'underbridge', with the cycle path entirely in the open air, only passing under the road where it is placed on a bridge. This reduces the sense of being confined, and improves the feeling of safety.
There is a clear line of sight through the underpass, along with street lighting. The path itself is wide, with a separate footway for pedestrians, to remove any conflict betweeh these two modes.
A final detail is a noise barrier on the bridge, to minimise the effects of road noise on both the residential neighbourhood, and on the users of this path.
