This week's Good Facility is the new cycleway on Blackfriars Bridge in London. Scene of multiple protests, this bridge now boasts a 4m wide bi-directional cycleway on the western side, one that has eliminated turning conflicts at the Blackfriars junction at the northern end of the bridge, separating cycling entirely from motor traffic.
The sliproad by the Thames is now a cycling-only road, connecting with this cycleway. Motor traffic now crosses this cycleway only on the northern sliproad, and is signal controlled.
The only minor quibbles are that the cycleway, while visually distinct from the footway, is not vertically separated, which may cause problems for those with visual impairment - and also that it might already be at capacity at rush hour!
