This week we're featuring another example of how cycling (and walking) can be prioritised at pinch points.
This is a historic pinch point, the Smedenpoort, one of the four remaining city gates in the Belgian city of Bruges. There's only space in the middle for motor vehicles to pass in one direction, so motor traffic has to queue to take it in turns.
People walking and cycling, however, can pass through without any delay. The cycle tracks (raised from the road) run through the smaller arches to the side, while walking bridges have been added around the side of the gate, to keep walking and cycling separate from each other.
It's a question of priorities, when space is tight. In this case the city of Bruges has prioritised walking and cycling.
