This week's Good Facility is a protected cycleway in the city centre of Nijmegen in the Netherlands.
As can be seen on Streetview, this road previously had just painted cycle lanes. It has recently been rebuilt, upgraded with fully protected cycleways, bus stop bypasses and junction treatments. The cycleway runs between parking and the footway, rather than the previous painted lane running between parked cars and motor traffic.
This particular photograph illustrates several key features. There is a continuous footway and cycleway running across the side road on the left, making it clear that walking and cycling has priority, and that drivers should yield when driving in and out of the side road. There is a sharp ramp to slow drivers too. Zebra crossings are provided at regular intervals to make crossing the road safe and easy. Planting - including new trees - has been added to reduce the intrusion of motor traffic.
Finally the road itself is narrow, with no centre line. The narrow lanes help to ensure that motor traffic speeds are kept low.
