Good Cycling Facility of the Week: 31st August 2017

This week's Good Facility is a priority cycle crossing on the F59 'Fast Cycle Route' between 's-Hertogenbosch and Oss in the Netherlands.

The intention of the F59 route is to provide a route between the city and the town with as few interruptions and stops as possible. While it is not perfect for the entirety of its length, it mostly achieves this aim, thanks to crossings like this one.

The visual priority of the crossing here is clear; the cycleway is a different red asphalt from the road, and is clearly marked with priority. It is also placed on a hump, meaning drivers have to slow.

The geometry is also particularly important. The crossing meets the road at a 90° angle, meaning there is good intervisibility - both parties can see each other approaching clearly. The crossing is also placed on a bend for drivers, where they are naturally slowing down anyway. All key elements of good crossing design!
