Good Cycling Facility of the Week: 30th November 2017

This week's Good Facility is an example of series of low-motor-traffic residential streets in the Dutch city of Nijmegen.

These streets actually form a fietsstraat, or cycle street, and have been recently resurfaced with smooth red asphalt (see Google Streetview for the former surface). 

However the key detail is the deliberate design that prevents these streets being used as through-routes. Both the streets in this photograph are closed to through motor traffic at either end (although they form useful routes for cycle traffic), and although they allow cycling in both directions, motor traffic cannot drive along this route, with opposing one-way flow (towards the camera on the nearer street, and away from the camera on the street in the background).

All this means that these streets are safe, quiet and attractive residential areas, while simultaneously a comfortable and direct route for cycle traffic.
