This week's Good Cycling Facility is an example of a cycleway crossing a side road, with clear priority, in the Dutch city of Assen.
This design is the so-called 'bent out' design, where the cycleway moves further from the main road as it crosses the side road. This isn't to slow people cycling down, but instead allows space for motor traffic entering the main road to wait without obstructing the cycleway, as shown in the photograph. It also allows drivers to leave the main road, and then pause before crossing the cycleway, giving them time to more easily observe people cycling along it.
