A close-up look this week at an important detail of cycling infrastructure - kerbing.
This 45° kerb is between a cycleway and a footway in the Dutch city of Assen. There is no vertical element between the two, meaning it is relatively easy to cycle across onto the footway from the cycleway (and vice versa). This is important because it minimises the risk of people being thrown from their cycles if they hit the kerb, which would happen with a kerb with an upstand.
In addition, this design allows people to cycle right on the edge of the cycleway, without having to worry about the kerb (which wouldn't be possible with a full height kerb, or vertical, kerb). This means the effective width of the cycleway is maximised.
