This week's Good Facility is an illustration of how designing well for walking and cycling goes hand-in-hand.
This is an upgraded section of Cycle Superhighway 7 in London, at Oval. The cycling infrastructure here is a stepped track, slightly higher than the carriageway, slightly lower than the footway.
As it passes Magee Street, the footway is continuous - no breaks, no tactile paving. Drivers exiting from this side street are actually driving over footway to access the road. The footway also continues at the same level, relative to the road, meaning drivers have to negotiate a ramp to get up and over the footway and cycleway.
This side street is exit-only for motor vehicles, meaning there will be no turning conflicts whatsoever with motor vehicles turning across the cycleway, into the side road.
All these design features help to ensure priority for cycling and walking, and that drivers should behave carefully as they cross onto the main road.
(The posts in the middle of the footway here are the old 'No Entry' posts, which should be removed!)
