The road to the south of the Minster in York is a cycle-only route; a safe and useful connection running east-west across the city centre. Entry is closed to motor vehicles at both ends of the route with one simple bollard, as shown in the picture.
This area, free from motor traffic, has recently been changed into a public square; the existing tarmac road has been integrated into the public realm.
While the smooth, flush surface is easier for pedestrians to cross, it is not immediately obvious that a cycle route runs through this area. So what could have made this route really excellent is a little more visual distinction between the cycle route, and the pedestrian areas, to avoid confusion.
