Good Cycling Facility of the Week: 14th March 2019

Two-way, or bi-directional, cycleways have some disadvantages, particularly at junctions, where people crossing the cycleway have to deal with movements from two directions, rather than one. That makes it especially important to

• make it clear that the cycleway runs in two directions
• to slow motor traffic before it crosses the cycleway
• to make it absolutely clear that cycle traffic has priority

This is achieved with this (new) section of cycleway in the Dutch city of Delft. In particular there is a large waiting area for motor traffic off the main carriageway, built up on a ramp, meaning drivers are slowed and also have space and time to asses the cycleway before crossing. Both people walking and cycling have clear priority over motor traffic.
