'Forgiving kerbs' are angled, or splayed, kerbs that can be easily traversed by cycles, while still presenting a clear physical height difference between a cycleway and a footway.
They are an essential way of reducing crash risk, and also maximise the effective width of a cycleway. They are also important because they allow users who cannot dismount, or who cannot dismount easily, to enter and exit cycleways.
In the UK, forgiving kerbing can be constructed by employing a standard HB3 kerb, but laid on its side. This is the approach that has been used to construct cycleways in the city of Leicester.
