'Autoluwte' is a Dutch noun used to describe areas that have very low motor traffic levels. (The Dutch adjective 'autoluw' means 'low traffic').
An English approximation, coined by David Hembrow, is 'Nearly Car Free' area.
These areas should not to be confused with 'shared space'; although they may physically resemble a 'shared space' treatment, with minimal distinction (or no distinction at all) between footway and carriageway, the main ingredient of these areas is the removal of through motor traffic, leaving only access motor traffic (or no motor traffic at all).
