Good Cycling Facility of the Week: 17th December 2015

This week's Good Facility is a bi-directional cycleway in the Dutch city of Assen.

It's notable for a number of features. The width of the cycleway is good enough for two-abreast riding in each direction, allowing sociable cycling. There is also clear separation between pedestrians and people cycling, with a distinct footway. A bus stop is also just about visible in the left of the photograph, meaning this is technically a 'bus stop bypass'.

There is a cycleway on the other side of the road here; the one on this side is two-way for extra convenience, meaning the road doesn't have to be crossed, and trips can be made in the 'wrong' direction along this side of the road, which this family are taking advantage of.

Finally, there is good separation from the road, with a large verge planted with trees, and the cycleway (and footway) is independently lit - these measures ensure comfort, and social safety.
