Good Cycling Facility of the Week: 28th January 2016

This week's Good Facility is a 4m wide bi-directional cycleway in Zwolle. As can be seen in the photograph, this cycleway is easily wide enough to accommodate social side-by-side cycling.

The cycleway replaces the previous arrangement of paint-only lanes on each side of the road (visible on Streetview by scrolling back to 2009).The new arrangement provides a much greater degree of comfort and subjective safety - people cycling are now separated from the road by a wide verge, rather than just a line of paint. (The roundabout in the background has also been upgraded from paint-only lanes to physical separation).

Priority over the (minor) side roads is clearly established through the use of markings and continuity in the design of the cycleway, with distinct red tarmac. The footway is also continuous. 

The footway and cycleway are well-lit, with separate low lighting columns separate from the road lighting.
