Road Tax

This is an incorrect term for Vehicle Excise Duty or vehicle tax - a tax on vehicles emissions.

The term is still sadly in common use, despite having been stopped as an official concept in 1937. The continued use of the term 'road tax' is a problem for cycling because it is often used to imply that ‘payment for roads = greater right to them’, and that therefore people cycling have no right to use the road network, or are there on sufferance, because they don't pay.

A closely allied belief is that cycling infrastructure should be funded by 'cyclists' themselves, presumably by a form of cycle-specific 'road tax'.
